MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT FRANC BENTLEY
FRANC'S FABLES

We are all saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Joy Haarhoff, and deep sympathy goes to Pierre and family.

Penny and I had the pleasure of attending the opening of Youth for Art Exhibition – material and prizes sponsored by Rotary. Our town has astonishing young talent, being ardently cultivated by a group of local dedicated proficient artists. Bravo, New Generations for once again supporting this significant venture which is cause for much excitement, among the young participants, at this annual display of their efforts.

At FAMSA’s AGM, Rotary was included in their Roll of Appreciation and warmly thanked for assisting with furnishing the offices at their new premises. Two computers have been donated to Prison Services to assist in rehabilitation of inmates this past month.

Ten Matric learners, five of whom are Sea Cadets, have additional Maths tuition (is it too late for me?) sponsored by Free Lessons for Knysna Schoolchildren (FLKS) and Rotary. They were treated to a braai by New Generations, at Sports School, on the eve of beginning their preliminary exams. We wish them much success.

Best wishes to Walker, Huskisson and Greenwood families as they’ve all been blessed with arrival of new grandchildren!

Praise to Anns for initiating Heritage Day, Feet for Food Fun Walk! I am confident this may potentially become an annual event judging by the pleasure so clearly expressed by all participants.

2010 is passing at blurring speed: take time for patience, tolerance and understanding in thought and action.

Franc

JOY HAARHOFF

Joy Haarhoff passed away on 31 August 2010 and will be missed by all the Rotarians and Anns in Knysna. We will remember her dedication, hard work and friendliness in everything that she did in her 53 years as an Ann. She served with distinction as the President of the Anns at two different Clubs. COMPUTER HANDOVER AT CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

The Rotary Club of Knysna donated three computers to the Correctional Services in Knysna for their well-run Rehabilitation Project. Twelve inmates were chosen to attend the computer classes. They were selected by the Training Officer and Mr Brian Bird, who teaches these classes which are held weekly. The selection was based on the candidate’s education level and their interests. Thanks to Builders Trade Depot who cut the wood and Glenn Jordan Designs who built the desks for these computers.

EXTRA MATHS CLASSES FOR MATRIC PUPILS

The Rotary Club of Knysna finances the classes of ten Grade 12 students from Knysna Secondary School and Knysna High. A retired teacher, Michael Dragner, teaches these classes in the afternoons and on Saturdays. Michael said: “I want to motivate and help the children of the community”. The learners are very excited about the classes they attend and about their studies next year. They all have big plans for their future careers.

FELLOWSHIP WEEKEND AT BUFFALO HILLS

Rotarian Rudy Rippe organised a fellowship weekend at Buffalo Hills for eighteen Rotarians. Everybody had lots of fun on the game drives, mealtimes and on the walk in the forest. The “snake show” was entertaining for those who were interested. There was also lots to learn from the very accommodating guides. Everyone enjoyed the warm and comfortable accommodation in the luxury tents and chalets. Thank you Rudy!

OUR NEW MEETING VENUE – THE KNYSNA YACHT CLUB!

Very few Rotary Clubs can claim to have such a beautiful view from their meeting place. The members of the Rotary Club of Knysna are very happy about the move to the Yacht Club at the Knysna Waterfront for their Tuesday lunch meetings. It is not only the view that makes the meeting place special. The friendly service, good food and atmosphere also help to make the Yacht Club a good choice. The members also enjoy hosting the many visiting Rotarians from other clubs from all around the world to the new venue.

MORE JERSEYS FROM AUSTRALIA

Another box of jerseys and baby booties for new-born babies and small children at the Provincial Hospital was received from the wonderful group of “Knitting Ladies” in Australia. This group of knitters has, on several occasions, not only warmed the babies, but also the hearts of the very grateful mothers.

EXTRACT FROM STEENBOK NATURE RESERVE OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

The last 12 months have resulted in significant community involvement and recognition. The reserve manager received a Rotary Community Service award and Leisure Isle Ratepayers’ Association hosted an event to rename the “Wandelpad” to “Roger’s Way”. Our relationships with SANParks, the Knysna Municipality and other relevant organizations remain strong. In July, the Reserve was used for the very successful Rotary children's cycle race.

FEET FOR FOOD

Rotary Ann Sue Mills thought that the new road around the lagoon should be christened with a fun walk in aid of local feeding schemes. The thought came to her in the beginning of August and the Anns started to organize. Unfortunately Sue became ill and Penny, the Anns’ President, took over the project. Adverts were sponsored by various papers, tickets were printed, water was donated by Pick n Pay and the necessary permission was obtained from the municipality.

A cool Saturday morning arrived with no rain. The Rotarians helped with the marshalling and other tasks. Happy people, old and young, with and without dogs, arrived at the two starts. There was much fun and fellowship on the long walk of about nine km and the short one of about three km. At the end, at Loerie Park, the Stepping Stones food stall was waiting to serve the hungry walkers. Everybody, walkers and workers, enjoyed the day. A few walkers asked to have the event more often. Well done to the organizers and all the participants!
