PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

FRANC'S FABLES
Thanks to Club Admin for arranging the Club’s Birthday and Awards Evening which went off very well. Congratulations to recipients of Certificates of Service and Paul Harris Awards and in particular to our worthy club member, Alan Warne – well done!

Attendees at the 86th conference of District 9350, in Hermanus, really did ‘connect create and collaborate’. Speakers were motivating and entertaining and it was a most enjoyable experience being at this well-run event. Saturday evening’s Medieval Magic was great fun and we received the fancy dress prize! Our Anns were recipients of two awards – Community Service and Best Attendance and not to be outdone, The Rotary Club of Knysna won the following awards: Youth (Bath/Knysna Interact Project), Community Service (Ear Nose and Throat Week and Wheelchair Project) and Public Relations (Club that best increases awareness of Rotary in community). Well done to all concerned and Mike Mills, you did a sterling job as MC at Saturday’s Conference proceedings.

This past weekend saw us manning bars at the Simola Hill Climb – hard work, great Club fellowship and PR for Rotary and well orchestrated by Rob Clark.

Handover day at Chalkey Talkey Pre-school (Fraaisig) and Siyafunda Pre-school (Rhobololo) was accompanied by a magnificent cloudburst. Thanks go to Rotarians, Interactors and their teachers for attending the culmination of a project involving eight Interact Clubs and presentation of new equipment covered by a Matching Grant with Bath. Sincere admiration goes to Rotarians Lesley and Ina for their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment over many months to see this vast project reach its conclusion which brings joy and fulfilment to many!

Sesel, I wish you, Knysna Rotary Golf Committee and the entire ‘workforce’ a successful and happy Golf Weekend.

May has been filled with many satisfying Rotary achievements and June is eagerly anticipated as it promises to be another month of gratifying activity for our Club! Our new President’s induction dinner will be held on Friday 24 June so members please make a note and don’t miss it

Franc

MORE WHEELCHAIRS

On 14 April 2011, PP Ian Huskisson handed over a new wheelchair to Petrus Landman of Karatara. Petrus lost his legs in a car accident many years ago and has been dependent on a wheelchair for mobility. He had received his previous wheelchair twelve years ago and by the time it was replaced, it was worn with use and rusty in many places. A wheelchair provides Petrus with greater mobility and improved quality of life. Despite his serious disability, he is a strong and cheerful man. A wheelchair was also handed over to Koos Prins of Farleigh. Koos is frail and can only move around with great difficulty. Having a wheelchair will make it easier for his wife, Jacobus, to look after him as she will be able to take him around more easily. Rotarians Ian Huskisson, Derrick and Barbara Ikin have been visiting and assessing possible recipients of wheelchairs in Karatara and Farleigh.
Petrus Landman was delighted to receive
his new wheelchair from Past President Ian Huskisson.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF KNYSNA’S 49TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AND AWARDS EVENING

On 3 May 2011 the Rotary Club of Knysna held its 49th Club Birthday and Awards evening at Quay 4 on Thesen Island. Four citizens of Knysna were honoured for their contributions to the community:

Lali Dwyer was awarded the Rotary Community Service Award for her indefatigable work in feeding dogs and cats in the township. At Animal Welfare she is well known for the muffins she regularly bakes for the workers, earning herself the title of “muffin lady”. In addition, Lali generously donates ingredients to soup kitchens whenever her budget allows this. The Rotary Club of Knysna honours and salutes this modest, generous and compassionate lady.

Paul Harris Awards, the highest award in Rotary, were given to Keith Cretchley, Richard Sohn and Knysna Rotarian Alan Warne.

Keith Cretchley at the Awards evening

Keith Cretchley founded the Knysna Sport School in 1992. Since then he has been the inspiration and dynamo behind the character and success of the school. Keith has combined his love of sport and working with children to provide a safe sporting haven for children from all sectors of our community. Outreach facilities and programmes have been established at Karatara, Wittedrif and Rheenendal. The school’s development programme reaches over 250 children in previously disadvantaged areas of our society. We salute Keith for the passion and dedication with which he has translated his vision into a highly active and inspirational sports school for all the children of Knysna.

Richard Sohn has been the founding chairman and driving force of the Knysna Education Trust (KET) since its formation in 1994. KET works tirelessly to upgrade pre-school education in Knysna and in this way reduce social and educational disparities in the various sectors of our community. The focus is on facilitating early learning by providing improved facilities, programmes and equipment. Other aspects include teacher development; adopt a child’s education, feeding schemes and bursaries. Richard has been a great and active source of inspiration, ideas and support for this most worthy NGO.

Knysna Rotarian Alan Warne was awarded the Paul Harris award for over twenty years service to Rotary. Alan was commended for the commitment and hard work which he applied as the chairman of the committee of the club’s annual cycle race, often working under very difficult circumstances. Furthermore, Alan has shown great perseverance and enthusiasm for the Rotary Club of Knysna’s service projects, both as a member of the service projects committee as well as its director.

I am truly grateful to all of you for your consideration and care and I will do all I can to live up to the expectations of those who are presented with this prestigious award.

The Knysna Anns express our thanks to Rotary for their support as DOTS is a Rotary International programme supported in all countries in which Rotary operates and our local undertaking has progressed over the past 10 years through the efforts of both Knysna Rotarians and Anns. Currently we have a total of 27 dedicated ‘Rotary families’ on the sandwich roster. If it were not for the subsidy Knysna Rotary so generously bestows to the Anns each year this vital sandwich service almost certainly could not survive!
