Townes Osborne, a Rotary friend from the Rotary Club of Knoxville, Tennessee, arranged to visit Knysna with four young "Rotary people", Erin Bernstein, a returned Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and three Rotary Interactors from Webb School, Stephanie Biggs, Connor Moore and Sam Adams. Unfortunately, at the last minute Townes had an emergency and could not come, so the young people came without her. A modified programme had to be prepared for them.
They all stayed with Past Presidents Ian and Joan Huskisson, who also arranged a “Getting-to-know-you” supper for them at their home on Sunday night.
On Monday morning they had a wonderful trip to Featherbed in perfect weather. Afterwards they all went with Keith Cretchley of the Knysna Sports School to deliver library books to the Rheenendal Primary School and 5 new bicycles to children from this year's Safe Cycling programme, also supported by the Rotary Club of Knysna
Early Tuesday morning they assisted Sandy Shires and her team handing out food to the casual labourers who stand along George Rex Drive waiting for work opportunities.
Later that morning, they did the handover on behalf of the Rotary Club of Knoxville of educational games to 7 Grade R classes. These games were the end of a Matching Grant worth more than R120 000. This was done by President Franc of the Rotary Club of Knysna at Knysna Child Welfare. The four from Knoxville then toured some of the preschools in the townships, and handed over books as well. They also handed over educational games to the new Grade R class at Chris Nissen Primary School. They later attended the Rotary lunch meeting where the visitors were the guest speakers. After lunch the Interactors were collected to accompany the Montessori Interactors to visit the York High Interactors in George. Erin spent the afternoon with Annette Nelson at the Knysna Education Trust, finding out about the SOUNS literacy programme that is being driven from KET for the whole Rotary District 9350.
On Wednesday morning they proceeded to Brackenhill Primary School, where they met again with Keith Cretchley and Past President Lesley Satchel for the handover of 3 more bicycles from Townes for the Safe Cycling programme, and library books. Irmela Parkendorf then took them on to Plettenberg Bay where they all bungee jumped at Blaaukrantz, had lunch and had close encounters with elephants at the Knysna Elephant Park.
That evening the New Generations Committee hosted a traditional braai for the visitors to meet 20 Interactors and teachers from all 5 Interact Clubs in Knysna. All tucked in and Interact fellowship among all the members thrived!
It was another early day on Thursday when they helped again with feeding the hungry on George Rex Drive. They then went to Percy Mdala School where they accompanied three Interactors whom they had met the previous evening, to their classes. They then joined the Montessori Interactors for lunch.
After lunch Derrick Wheeldon accompanied them to the Knysna Sea Cadets, where they were met by Steve Erickson and several Sea Cadets. The Rotary Club of Knoxville provided computers for the Sea Cadets some years ago. Joan and Ian then took them to Noetzie, at Erin's request, and they were lucky enough to experience a pod of dolphins swimming past very close to the shore - surely a wonderful sight so early in the season for young people who live in a land-locked state!
Some Rotarians joined them for a sea food supper at the Waterfront.
On Friday morning they had some time shopping before they set off on the BAZ Bus for Stanford, near Hermanus, where they had a few days with ex-Knoxville Rotarians who have settled there.
What a busy few days! They all said that they could only be in Knysna for a short time so needed to do it all, and that they could sleep back home! They thanked the Rotarians who helped towards the success of this full, hectic and varied programme. It was greatly appreciated.
