MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT FRANC BENTLEY

FRANC'S FABLES

Hello all Rotarians

The new Rotary Year has begun productively with the 2010 Cycle Tour running like clockwork (as usual). The many participants I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed the event. Thank you Alan and your diligent committee and also to all within Knysna Rotary - your commitment to this vast project is to be commended.

Induction Dinner 17 July was a gala event and Penny and I thank you for attending, especially those who travelled a long way. Imagine having wine served with your own personal label! Well done Ian B and your dedicated committee – your superb attention to detail to ensure that all was perfect is appreciated. It was my pleasure to induct two experienced Rotarians, Vicky Tricker and Terry Hime, at this special occasion – welcome to Knysna Rotary. My theme for the coming year is Fun and Fellowship. Let us go forward with consciousness of this force which binds our organisation. May your praises be plentiful and criticisms, helpful and gentle. Thank you for the opportunity to be your 2010/11 President and Penny and I look forward to a memorable year ahead.

Yours in Rotary
Franc

WHAT PAUL HARRIS SAID for July 2010

Now as the Rotary New Year begins, I wish you all of the prosperity which your good deeds merit.

May all things you ought to have be yours.

May your charities rank among your necessary expenditures.

May you not fall into the popular error of thinking that happiness is to be found in outdoing your neighbours.

May it always be yours to look beneath the veneer of life to the solid substance which lies beneath.

May you be builders, not mere climbers.

May you be able to appraise life's blessings at their real worth.

May you be free to act in accordance with the dictates of your own conscience and good judgment.

May you not be slaves to meaningless customs, social or otherwise.

May you shun the groove followers.

May you have vision to discern the right and health, strength and will to do it.

From "The Future of Rotary "  By Paul P. Harris, Founder of Rotary, President Emeritus of the I. A. of R. C.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF KNYSNA SAYS THANK YOU

The Rotary Club of Knysna had their hands full the past few weeks planning and preparing for the Pick n Pay Weekend August Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour. It was all hands on deck to get everything ready for the three Mountain Bike Races on Saturday and the two Road Races on Sunday.

About 3 500 cyclists took part on Saturday in the Mountain Bike 15 km, 50 km and 85 km races. The first three in the 85 km were David George, Kevin Evans and Matthys Beukes. The first lady was Yolanda Speedy with Mariska Strauss second and Hanlie Booysen third. The 50 km race was won by Ruan du Toit with Louis Bester second and Warwick Wardeck third. The winning ladies, in the 50 km race, were Francis Barnard, Michelle Lombardi and Ronel Thiart.

The Sunday’s Road Races were also a very big success when 2 500 cyclist took to the 100 km and 50 km road races. The 100km race was won by Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg with Jaco Venter and Arron Brown close behind. Mariska Strauss was the first lady with Lizanne Naude and Andriette Schoeman second and third respectively.

The Spur Rotary Knysna Children’s Tour on Leisure Island on Sunday was also well supported by the 400 children between the ages of two and nine years.

Except for all the races the Rotary Club played a very imported roll in the Safe Cycling and Development in the community.

DEVELOPMENT CYCLING 2010
Development Riders The Rotary Club of Knysna has facilitated a Development Cycling Programme at the Knysna Sports School for the past four years. Half the bicycles are based at the Sports School in Knysna and half are at Rheenendal where an outreach base has been established. Young girls are also active participants in the programme.

25 Cyclists from the Sports School also rode in the Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Knysna Rotary Cycle Tour in the 15km and 50km Mountain Bike events, while some of the better riders participated in the 85km event. 15 riders received cycling kits from Spur. Two cyclists, Ayrton Jonkerman and Vernon Moos, one of the coaches, completed the 85km event in under four hours, which is a remarkable achievement for an entry-level Mountain Bike.

Knysna Rotary Club is looking for good quality Mountain Bikes for the more advanced cyclists. Please phone John Satchel (082 921 2362) if you have one that you no longer use.

SAFE CYCLING PROGRAMME 2010
The Knysna Sports School has been running a Safe Cycling Programme at primary schools in the townships for the past four years, thanks to the support of the Rotary Club of Knysna and a kind Rotarian sponsor of the kiddies’ bicycles in Knoxville Tennessee.

This year eight children from the Brackenhill and Rheenendal Primary Schools participated in the Spur Kiddies’ Cycle Race on Leisure Island.

They all had special t-shirts printed with the new Rotary Motto: Building Communities, Bridging Continents. On Sunday, 4 July, they must have been one of the first to display and depict the meaning of the motto in the new Rotary Year.

All the money made during the weekend with the Cycle Tour will be used to help uplift the local community.

The Rotary Club of Knysna would like to thank the residents of Knysna and surrounds for their patience and support and express congratulations to all the winners and participants. A big “Thank You” also goes to all the sponsors who supported the Cycle Tour.

EYECHARTS FOR PRIMARY HEALTH CARE CLINICS
Clinic Staff General Optical of Cape Town donated Snellen eye charts and occluders for sixteen primary health care clinics in the Knysna region. These charts are used to measure visual acuity in diabetics as well as general patients, and are suitable for both children and adults. The Rotary Club of Knysna augmented the charts with normal letter charts so that they are applicable for all levels of literacy. Rotarian Andy Muir was the driving force of this project. At the handover of the charts, Andy held a training and demonstration session for twenty primary health workers at the Provincial Hospital in Knysna.

KNOXVILLE ROTARY INTERACTORS’ VERY BUSY FIVE DAYS IN KNYSNA

Townes Osborne, a Rotary friend from the Rotary Club of Knoxville, Tennessee, arranged to visit Knysna with four young "Rotary people", Erin Bernstein, a returned Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and three Rotary Interactors from Webb School, Stephanie Biggs, Connor Moore and Sam Adams.   Unfortunately, at the last minute Townes had an emergency and could not come, so the young people came without her.  A modified programme had to be prepared for them.

They all stayed with Past Presidents Ian and Joan Huskisson, who also arranged a “Getting-to-know-you” supper for them at their home on Sunday night.

On Monday morning they had a wonderful trip to Featherbed in perfect weather.  Afterwards they all went with Keith Cretchley of the Knysna Sports School to deliver library books to the Rheenendal Primary School and 5 new bicycles to children from this year's Safe Cycling programme, also supported by the Rotary Club of Knysna

Early Tuesday morning they assisted Sandy Shires and her team handing out food to the casual labourers who stand along George Rex Drive waiting for work opportunities.

Later that morning, they did the handover on behalf of the Rotary Club of Knoxville of educational games to 7 Grade R classes.  These games were the end of a Matching Grant worth more than R120 000.  This was done by President Franc of the Rotary Club of Knysna at Knysna Child Welfare. The four from Knoxville then toured some of the preschools in the townships, and handed over books as well.   They also handed over educational games to the new Grade R class at Chris Nissen Primary School. They later attended the Rotary lunch meeting where the visitors were the guest speakers.  After lunch the Interactors were collected to accompany the Montessori Interactors to visit the York High Interactors in George.  Erin spent the afternoon with Annette Nelson at the Knysna Education Trust, finding out about the SOUNS literacy programme that is being driven from KET for the whole Rotary District 9350.

On Wednesday morning they proceeded to Brackenhill Primary School, where they met again with Keith Cretchley and Past President Lesley Satchel for the handover of 3 more bicycles from Townes for the Safe Cycling programme, and library books.  Irmela Parkendorf then took them on to Plettenberg Bay where they all bungee jumped at Blaaukrantz, had lunch and had close encounters with elephants at the Knysna Elephant Park.

That evening the New Generations Committee hosted a traditional braai for the visitors to meet 20 Interactors and teachers from all 5 Interact Clubs in Knysna.   All tucked in and Interact fellowship among all the members thrived!

It was another early day on Thursday when they helped again with feeding the hungry on George Rex Drive.  They then went to Percy Mdala School where they accompanied three Interactors whom they had met the previous evening, to their classes.  They then joined the Montessori Interactors for lunch.

After lunch Derrick Wheeldon accompanied them to the Knysna Sea Cadets, where they were met by Steve Erickson and several Sea Cadets.  The Rotary Club of Knoxville provided computers for the Sea Cadets some years ago.  Joan and Ian then took them to Noetzie, at Erin's request, and they were lucky enough to experience a pod of dolphins swimming past very close to the shore - surely a wonderful sight so early in the season for young people who live in a land-locked state!

Some Rotarians joined them for a sea food supper at the Waterfront.

On Friday morning they had some time shopping before they set off on the BAZ Bus for Stanford, near Hermanus, where they had a few days with ex-Knoxville Rotarians who have settled there.

What a busy few days!  They all said that they could only be in Knysna for a short time so needed to do it all, and that they could sleep back home!  They thanked the Rotarians who helped towards the success of this full, hectic and varied programme.  It was greatly appreciated.
